Wouter Kemink

Wouter Kemink is a trader at Melkweg Holland dairy trading company. He describes the company as “an international surprise in the Veluwe”, for which he tries every day to make the best dairy deals. “We serve the whole world from our recently beautifully renovated building in De Klomp, near Ede. We deal with every continent in a single day.”

Wouter thoroughly enjoys his challenging and varied job at Melkweg. “Every Monday, the counter is reset to zero and the world can look very different compared to a few days earlier. As a trader, my job is to match the supply and demand of the global dairy market to get the best deal. I get a huge kick out of it when I succeed.”

The team of around 30 he works with is crucial in achieving this. “In a trading house, you’re only as strong as your weakest link. That’s why we work as a close-knit team and share the same attitude: everyone wants to win. We always talk in ‘volleyball’ terms: passing the ball back and forth and then scoring with a smash. Logistics might arrange a better transport rate, and then QA gets an extra supplier approved on a contract, while, against all odds, commercial support manages to get a sample to a customer on time, at the last minute. That’s what makes Melkweg a success.

Wouter has not worked for Melkweg for very long. When asked how he found his way to the company in De Klomp, he replies: “Melkweg and its current director Johan Kaashoek are very well-known names, with an excellent reputation in the dairy world, and I already had family working for the VanDrie Group, so making contact was easy.
